Rikuzentakata Junior High School Competition

This is our proposal for a new school building in Rikuzentakata city. In 2011, the city was severely affected by the Tohoku earthquakes, and the old school buildings were critically damaged. The new school building consists of rectangle volumes of various sizes (the "Salles"), which line up diagonally along the terrain of the construction site. A "Salle" is a wide open space supported by the columns around, inside of which there is no structural support. One "Salle" may have several classrooms, multi-purpose rooms, or special rooms necessary for the operation of the school. The "Salles" are connected directly with each other without any corridors. This organic network of "Salles" creates a wider flexible space. We aimed to create an "ecological architecture," which is inclusive and sustainable, so that the building can work not only as a school for the students, but also as a community center for the wider local public.
